The cold temperatures of winter are finally gone and we’re starting to see some nice warm days. At Mr. Pavement, that means it’s time to start sealcoating some driveways! If it’s been a few years since you’ve invested in an asphalt driveway sealcoating or if your driveway is simply looking drab, spring (particularly May) is a great time to give it back that luster and protection from the upcoming summer UV rays.
Why Sealcoat?
By coating your asphalt driveway in a sealant, you can seal any small cracks that may be present and prevent them from growing larger. Because these cracks are sealed, you’ll also prevent water from seeping into them and making them worse. An asphalt driveway sealcoating can also help smooth out any crevices or dips and can give your driveway a beautiful, rich look.
Why May?
You may be wondering why May is the perfect time for a sealcoating. Some homeowners opt to sealcoat their driveway in the summer, but hot summer temperatures and heavy summer rains can be harsh on asphalt. On the other hand, early spring temperatures can be too cold and the water present in the sealant can freeze overnight, causing problems.
In May, temperatures are warm in the daytime and still a little cool at night, which allows the sealant to completely dry. In addition, the month of May is still low in humidity, which helps the drying process along. When a sealcoating doesn’t dry fully, it’s likely to fail prematurely. That’s why we favor spring for our sealcoatings.
Fall can also be a good time to sealcoat, however, there is more debris blowing through the air, which is less than ideal for drying conditions. Plus, you’ll have a better chance of getting a good sealcoating deal in the springtime.
