Pothole Causes

When it rains or snows during colder months, water seeps into the open cracks or crevices of your pavement. When the water freezes, it expands, which forces the pavement to rise. As vehicles drive over the raised area, they put stress on the pavement and once the water melts again, it leaves the once-risen area of pavement a little weaker.

As this freeze-thaw process continues, the pavement continues to weaken and eventually, a shallow divot forms underneath the pavement surface and causes the top layer of pavement to break. Potholes start as small areas and can continue to grow (getting both wider and deeper) as more and more traffic passes over them. If they’re not addressed quickly and properly, they can cause even larger issues.
